Baby Suffers Father’s Poor Newborn Care

From an apparent absence of newborn care and safety, a baby that was left under the care of its father, suffered severe brain and neck injuries. Giovanni Gomez, who first identified as Jiovanni Marzan, has been charged with aggravated assault, first and third-degree murder, and endangering the welfare of a child. According to the mother, she came home and found the baby cold, and her lips were blue.

The mother said when she came home to the child, at around 11:45 PM, the baby was whining in her sleep, and although it was not normal, she had suspected the symptoms could have been a cold. She was even more distressed the next morning when the baby was still whining in her sleep, and sounded congested. She went out to grab some medical supplies for the girl, but when she came back, the kid was struggling to breathe, which was when she called 911. According to the DA’s office, the issue was reported to the attention of the authorities on March 28, 2020.

Giovanni Gomez Not Jiovanni Marzan

Giovanni Gomez, the child’s father, 28-years-old, was met by investigators, and when he was asked to identify himself, he first identified as Jiovanni Marzan. Detectives later learned his real name and he was immediately arrested. It was clear he was trying to evade capture by going under an alias. The accused recounted his day with the child. According to him, he fed the child multiple times, and then bathed her around 8 PM.

He also recounted that the only problem he recalled was when she spit up one time, but did not mention any misconduct on his side that could indicate a lack of newborn care and safety. He also said he laid the child down to sleep at around 10:40 PM. Whether it was an intentional thing or it was from lack of newborn care and safety, or not knowing good baby care tips is yet to be discovered, but the charges still remain.

The Result of Lack of Newborn Care and Safety

The DA’s office reported that the baby’s mother had revealed to the detectives that she left the baby in the care of Giovanni Gomez, the child’s father, the day before the incident. The mother said she left the child with him before she left for work that day. According to the DA’s office, first responders came to the family residence shortly after the 911 call was made by the mother.

The reports came back that the baby had suffered a brain injury. The baby, an 11-week-old girl was unfortunately unable to survive the injuries she sustained. According to the DA’s office, she died on April 1, 2020. The hospital finally reported that the child had suffered a fatal brain injury and damage to her spinal cord. This affected the flow of blood to her brain. The doctors also reported that there were hemorrhages in the girl’s eyes, which were indicative of a traumatic head injury.
